Testimonials

“I often felt like I was missing a piece of a puzzle in my brain when I was in grad school.  Kevin taught me how to look for, find, and put the piece back in.  What could possibly be a better gift?”

-Alexandra Gurr Conrads,

Vicar, St. Martha's Episcopal Church, Los Angeles

“We are extremely happy with the assistance and support you've given MC over the years.  You have helped tremendously with her math issues, aiding her in seeing her problems for what they are and showing her how best to work around them.  We couldn't have asked for more.”

- Charles Mandolia, attorney and father

“Simply put, Kevin Dohmen works magic with students.  He has a natural gift for connecting with students and seeing the world from their vantage point so he can work with them to understand whatever they might be working on.

Kevin is so skilled in a variety of methods to find the solution, especially in math, that he can help bridge the gap between the child's teacher, his/her parents and the child's learning style.  It is a joy to watch him work!

It is rare to find a teacher who connects so quickly, finds common ground from which to begin untangling complex issues, respects his students and helps them to build self-esteem in the process.  I can’t say enough about the value that Kevin brings to the learning process.  He is a gem!”

- Diane Hill, businesswoman and mother of three

“Kevin Dohmen possesses all the qualities that parents yearn for in a teacher for their children. He has a passion for learning and knowledge that permeates throughout all his teaching methods and interactions  He has the ability to determine how a student best learns and guides them towards reaching their potential by maximizing their strengths and addressing any weaknesses. My son reports that, ‘Mr. Dohmen always find a way for me to understand something that I've had difficulty understanding before.’

Mr. Dohmen is an effective communicator, extremely patient, generous of heart and has a terrific sense of humor. He has been enormously helpful in our son's preparation for college, imparting study skills and approaches to learning that will last him a lifetime.”

This ability, coupled with a curiosity that fuels his passion for learning and teaching as well as a love for being around people, makes Kevin a rare find in the world of trainers.”

- Tyriek Ettrick, Marketing Analyst at VML

“Kevin has worked with my grandson, a learning disabled young man who was losing faith in himself, to find creative and personalized techniques for becoming accomplished in middle-school math. When they met, my grandson was failing math. Before the quarter was over, he had a mentor he trusts (Kevin) and an A average. By increasing the family's understanding of the issues facing my grandson, Kevin helped the family system to rally in support of the boy's effort. If you need a miracle, Kevin's your man.”

- Lee Franklin, Executive Coach & Owner of California Leadership Center, Inc.

“Kevin Dohmen is one of the most hardworking professionals I know. His work is exemplary, and his level of knowledge about learning is unsurpassed. His students all know they are lucky to work with such a fine professional.”

- Ruth C. Heitin, Ph.D., President, Educational Consulting Services

“Kevin helped me through middle school, high school, and college, as I struggled learning in subjects such as Math and English. He provided me with positive reinforcement over many years, working with me to find out-of-the-box ideas to help me conquer my ADD. In short, he helped me create a pathway to see me through my MA degree. I will continue to use these skills for the rest of my life. I highly recommend him.”

- Angela Scudder Colby-Rinker, Marketing Professional

“When it came time for my son to write his college application essay, Kevin first talked with him about how important it was for the essay to strike an emotional chord with the application committee. He stressed that the essay should reflect my son's personality and interests; it should give the reader a good idea of the type of person my son is, and what he expected to gain from college. My son followed this direction and wrote from his heart. The final version of the essay was touching and smart. My son was accepted to all four of the college music programs he applied for, one with a full scholarship.”

Terri Scullen, Professional Writer and mother of two

“Good editing is not a matter of correcting spelling and grammar.  It is the seeing through the sometimes garbled prose of the author to its essential themes.  Kevin Dohmen’s gentle humor and probing analysis have provided me a stimulus toward creativity that is rare in the craft of publishing today.”

David A. Schulz, PhD,  Professor of Sociology, Episcopal Priest, and author of eight graduate-school textbooks

“Both of my children have benefitted from working with Kevin over the last 12 years. Kevin is very experienced in dealing with all types of learners and can support students in a wide variety of content areas. He has helped my children with everything from writing research papers and essays, biology, chemistry, and studying for history exams, trigonometry and calculus. Kevin is truly an amazing resource—one that Northern VA is lucky to have.”

- Laurie Chester, ADHD Coach and Field School parent

“Abby participated in Kevin's writing workshop held during the summer.  There were six or seven young students, all rising sixth graders.  They met informally to discuss topics, to write, and to share their work with each other.  Kevin has a positive, accepting manner that allows the students to trust him and therefore to risk a little more of themselves.  I highly recommend his program.”

  1. -Kennon Bowen, Elementary School Teacher

“My son Matt was born more than two months early.  He fit in the palm of my hand and he had significant learning disabilities: language difficulties, auditory processing issues, dyslexia and dysgraphia.  And, if those weren’t enough, because of Attention Deficit Disorder, his brain was simply so overwhelmed by all the incoming data that he couldn’t sort out the important from the static.  He survived his first nine years in school.  Then, when he entered the tenth grade, we met Kevin Dohmen.  I drove Matt to Kevin’s twice a week for the first year.  The second year Matt got to Kevin’s on his own.  In his senior year Matt was accepted by every college and university to which he applied and three offered partial academic scholarships.

“Matt turned twenty one this year.  He starts his senior year of college in a few days.  His GPA for each of the last two semesters: 3.65.

“A few weeks ago, in the middle of July, Matt, Kevin and I had lunch at Union Station.  As we stood to leave, Matt held out his hand to Kevin and said: “Mr. Dohmen thanks for all you did to help me.  If it hadn’t been for you I don’t think I would be where I am today.”  I think Kevin was a little embarrassed, but he responded:  “Matt, you did the work.”

“All I could do was smile.  Of course they were both right.  Matt did the work, but he knew, he would not have had the skills and ability to do the work if Kevin hadn’t had the expertise, patience, persistence and wisdom to help him develop the tools he needed to learn how to learn

“So we left Union Station.  I went back to my office.  Matt went back to his Capitol Hill internship with the Speaker of the House.  Kevin went back to doing what he does best:  helping young people find out that they can do more than they know, showing them how to overcome challenges and enabling them to learn to use their gifts to build and shape their future.”

“We feel very fortunate to have Kevin work with Greg and our older son, Matt. His services are excellent -- not only with the children but also in his communication with teachers.

“Kevin has found the secret to teaching: consistently making a child feel, I can learn this.”
